Asus TUF Gaming VG32VQ with Simultaneous Blur Reduction and Variable Refresh Rate

Asus have announced their new TUF Gaming VG32VQ display, a 32″ curved model with a 2560 x 1440 VA technology panel and 144Hz refresh rate. The most exciting thing about this new model is that it is the first monitor announced to officially support variable refresh rates (VRR) through Adaptive-Sync at the same time as its strobing blur reduction backlight. Previously blur reduction backlights operated at afixed frequency, and so could not be used at the same time as G-sync or FreeSync. It was very much a choice between the two, with some people needing the VRR support for different and changing frame rates, and some people instead preferring the motion clarity and blur reduction benefits of the strobing backlight option.

Asus call their strobing blur reduction backlight mode “ELMB” (Extreme Low Motion Blur) and on this new VG32VQ display is it subbed “ELMB-SYNC” to signifiy that it can be used at the same time as Adapative-Sync. It’s a normal Adaptive-Sync/FreeSync display with 144Hz refresh rate, but can of course be used with NVIDIA G-sync as well thanks to their 2019 driver updates. It is not confirmed whether or not the screen will be officially certified as ‘G-sync Compatible‘ or not, or whether it will just offer standard support. Either way, the ability to use the blur reduction backlight at the same time as G-sync/FreeSync will be an interesting and popular new option for gamers. The screen specs are not confirmed at this stage but a 1ms MPRT spec is mentioned.

The VG32VQ is part of Asus’ new ‘TUF Gaming’ brand, which is described on their website as follows:
