LG 27GL83A with 27″ IPS Panel, 144Hz Refresh Rate and sRGB Gamut

A new display has appeared on some regional pages of LG.com. The LG 27GL83A is a 27″ screen which has very similar appearance, features and specs overall to the recently released (and reviewed) 27GL850. It has a 2560 x 1440 resolution IPS panel, 144Hz refresh rate and support for adaptive sync. This includes support for variable refresh rates from AMD FreeSync as well as being certified as G-sync Compatible by NVIDIA. The main difference between the new 27GL83A and the 27GL850 appears to be the use of a standard sRGB gamut backlight from the “Vivid IPS” panel (as LG refer to it), instead of the wide DCI-P3 gamut offered by the “Nano IPS” panel of the 27GL850.

Don’t get too confused by the different marketing names, these models are both based on IPS technology panels. The difference really is in the colour space supported by the backlight unit. The choice depends whether you want the more common sRGB gamut that the 27GL83A offers, or the wider gamut, more vivid colours that the 27GL850 offers – which is more suited to HDR content, gaming and multimedia.

Apart from the colour space difference, both models look very similar. They have the same design, bezel, stand and connections (1x DisplayPort 1.4, 2x HDMI 2.0 and a headphone jack). There are no USB ports on this model.

Spec wise they are the same as well with a 2560 x 1440 resolution, 1ms advertised G2G response time (see our review and tests of this on the 27GL850 for our comments on it!), 1000:1 contrast ratio, 350 cd/m2 brightness, 178/178 viewing angles, 1.07b colour depth.

No confirmation of release date or pricing in key regions like the US or UK yet.
