Wasabi Mango UHD430 with 43″ Ultra HD Panel and 120Hz
Korean display manufacturer Wasabi Mango launched earlier this year a 43″ sized display with an Ultra HD 3840 x 2160 resolution and 120Hz refresh rate support. It was previously available in the Eastern region, but has started to become available in Europe and the US through eBay importers, so we thought we would bring you some information about it.The UHD430 is 43″ in size and offers the combination of a 4K resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate – the two key selling points of this display. There is however no support for any variable refresh rate technology, either NVIDIA G-sync or AMD FreeSync (via Adaptive Sync) and so powering the res/refresh rate may be a challenge to many systems at this time. There is a chance that Wasabi Mango may later add support for AMD FreeSync through a firmware update, as that is something they did with their previous UHD420 screen a few years back. You can run the full resolution at 120Hz without any chroma sub-sampling needed from the graphics card, but it would be limited to 8-bit colour depth. If you drop down to 98Hz or below, then a full 10-bit colour depth can be supported via the DisplayPort 1.4 interface as it is then within bandwidth limits. This is much like the Asus ROG Swift PG279UQ we’ve reviewed recently.
HDR is advertised by the manufacturer although you should be aware that this isn’t offering any true HDR performance. The screen does support 10-bit colour depth as we’ve stated above for 98Hz refresh rates and below, but there is only a standard sRGB colour space offered from the backlight and not the required DCI-P3 coverage you would need for HDR content. There is also only a maximum 400 cd/m2 brightness spec, and no peak brightness up anywhere near the 1000 cd/m2 offered by some true-HDR displays. Most important of all, there is no talk of any local dimming operation here which would be needed to actually improve the dynamic range and contrast ratio in practice. So all in all, another “fake HDR” implementation.
The screen is based on an IPS-type panel with a 5ms G2G response time, 1300:1 contrast ratio, 400 cd/m2 brightness, 178/178 viewing angles, 1.07b colour depth and sRGB gamut. There is a good range of connectivity options provided with 2x DisplayPort 1.4, 3x HDMI 2.0, 1x Toslink optical audio output and 1x USB input. The stand doesn’t appear to offer any ergonomic adjustments at all due to the screen size, but can be removed in favour of VESA mounting options if you prefer.
