Philips Momentum 328M1R for Console Gaming, with HDMI 2.1 Now Included
This model was briefly covered as part of a Philips display update back in August 2019 but it has been delayed to include some new technologies, and we felt it deserved a news piece of its own with more information. The Philips 328M1R is part of the company’s Momentum line up of screens aimed primarily at console gaming. This is a 31.5″ sized screen offering a 3840 x 2160 “4K” resolution along with a 120Hz refresh rate. Why the long delay? Because with the announcement of next generation Sony Playstation 5 and Microsoft Xbox Series X, Philips wanted to make sure they could include the latest HDMI 2.1 connection to take full advantage of the console capabilities.
HDMI 2.1 is a vital component to support these new games consoles including offering support for 4K @ 120Hz, and variable refresh rates (VRR) as well. If you want to know all about HDMI 2.1 you can read our new guide as well.
The screen itself is based on a VA technology panel offering a 3840 x 2160 resolution in a 31.5″ size. The screen is what you would probably call semi-glossy, with a mild (low haze) matte anti-glare finish. There is a 120Hz refresh rate offered as well to offer high refresh rate support and accommodate those news games consoles.
The screen features DisplayHDR 600 certification meaning there is some form of local dimming available, although only basic edge lit (number of zones TBC). The screen also offers a peak brightness of at least 600 cd/m2 as mandated by the certification, and also offers 10-bit colour depth support and a wide gamut covering >90% DCI-P3. So there is a focus on offering some HDR support from the screen and conforming at least to something better than HDR 400, again to help support next gen games consoles.
There is a focus from Philips on low input lag, stating <4ms in some of their early press material. The screen will feature some form of Philips Ambilight system for projecting lighting behind the screen like some of their TV’s. The stand offers tilt, height and swivel adjustments and can also be easily removed if you’d rather VESA mount the screen. For connections there are expected to be 3x HDMI 2.1 (the main reason for the delayed launch), 1x DP 1.4, 4x USB 3.0 and a headphone jack. There is an integrated 2.1 DTS sound system with 5W stereo speakers plus sub included.
Originally expected for May 2020 the release has been pushed back to “early 2021” to accommodate HDMI 2.1 inclusion. MSRP is expected to be in the region of €599.
