Acer Predator XN253QP and XN253QX for Gaming with 144Hz and 240Hz Refresh

Acer have recently launched a couple of new 24.5″ sized screens in their popular Predator gaming lineup. The two models are quite similar in name, specs and features and are separated primarily by their supported refresh rate. There is the XN253QP with 144Hz, and the XN253QX with 240Hz support. Both feature NVIDIA G-sync for variable refresh rates.

Both models feature a 3 side borderless design with familiar Predator styling used for the screen and stand. A full range of tilt, height, swivel and rotate adjustments are offered from the stand.

The 24.5″ sized screen is based on a TN Film panel and offers a 1920 x 1080 resolution, 1ms G2G response time, 1000:1 contrast ratio, 400 cd/m2 brightness, 170/160 viewing angles. The screen is based on a standard sRGB gamut backlight and has a 16.7m (8-bit colour depth).

The P model has a 144Hz refresh rate while the X model has 240Hz. It seems that Acer are also advertising the X model with a 0.4ms response time in some places, including the packaging. This is likely because it’s using one of the new AU Optronics 0.5ms response time generation of TN Film panels. Looks like we are starting to see manufacturers now compete on sub-1ms response time specs!

The 1080 resolution is still popular with eSports players, and is a suitable resolution for a screen this size. It will be less demanding on systems and graphics cards in fast gaming thank higher 1440p or 4K resolutions, especially when you consider you can support up to 144Hz/240Hz on these models. The screens feature a traditional G-sync module chip and so support NVIDIA G-sync for Variable Refresh Rates (VRR). A range of gaming extras and OSD options is provided like on many other Acer gaming displays. ULMB strobing backlight options for motion blur reduction is also available by the look of the user manual up to refresh rates of 144Hz at least. It’s not 100% clear if the X model will also support 240Hz ULMB at this time.

For connections there is 1x DisplayPort 1.2a and 1x HDMI 1.4 provided along with a 4 port USB 3.0 hub. 2x 2W speakers are also built in to the display.

The XB253QP model (144Hz version) is available already from Amazon US at a price of $449.99 and in Europe at €449.44 Euro. No word on release date or price for the UK yet.
