Acer have today announced their new Predator CG437K S display, a 42.5″ sized large format display aimed at PC and console gamers. It features a 3840 x 2160 “4K” resolution, 144Hz refresh rate and the latest HDMI 2.1 connectivity. The high res/refresh rate combination is supported via adaptive sync for VRR from both NVIDIA and AMD systems, including the ‘G-sync Compatible’ certification. There is also DisplayHDR 1000 certification for HDR content.

The CG437K S is an update to their existing CG437K P model with a few updated specs and features. Spec wise the 42.5″ sized screen offers a 3840 x 2160 resolution VA panel, and while other specs are not officially listed at the moment we can draw some conclusions based on the old model and the panel technology. We would expect a 4000:1 contrast ratio and 178/178 viewing angles for instance. The screen also comes factory calibrated with a dE <1.

A 1ms VRB (Visual Response Boost) spec is listed in the press release which is Acer’s strobing blur reduction backlight function. VESA DisplayHDR 1000 certification is included, with the screen using edge lit local dimming with a limited number of zones (TBC) as opposed to any FALD backlight option. This does offer 1000 cd/m2 peak brightness, and the screen also supports 90% DCI-P3 colour gamut and 10-bit colour depth too for colour enhancements.

The Predator CG437K S comes with RGB lighting strips that can be synced to music and media. It also features a range of thoughtful technology that allows the monitor to adjust to each user’s environment: Acer ColorSense adjusts the screen’s temperature to match the ambience of the environment, Acer LightSense detects ambient lighting and adjusts the monitor’s brightness settings accordingly, and Acer ProxiSense automatically wakes the monitor when users are nearby or dims it when they aren’t.

For connectivity there are 2x HDMI 2.1, 2x USB 3.0 and 2x USB 2.0 ports. There is also a USB type-C port (30W power delivery) although it’s not clear if this has DisplayPort Alt mode and can carry video, or not. Oddly DisplayPort isn’t mentioned in the press release but we would fully expect DisplayPort 1.4 here, hopefully with DSC to support 4K @ 144Hz without the colour sacrifices. There is also a built in KVM switch to help support multiple PC’s from the same screen.

According to the Acer press release today, the Predator CG437K S will be available will be available in North America in November starting at USD $1,799.99; in EMEA in November starting at EUR 1,599.
