LG.Display Latest Panel Development Plans – June 2019
We have some updates from LG.Display about their panel development plans which is always interesting to see. This is LG.Display as a panel manufacturer, as opposed to LG the monitor/display manufacturer, but it gives an indication of where monitors are likely to go in the future by looking ahead at the panel production plans. LG.Display make a large portion of the IPS-type panels in the market which is always of interest. Please keep in mind that the production dates are not set in stone and may change, and there is then also a lag of several months before a panel is produced, then used in a display and launched to market. We have updated our panel parts database with all the new information we have as well as best we can. Here are the highlights.
27″ IPS with 1440p and 165Hz now with DCI-P3 gamut
We talked about this one in our last couple of updates (May and Oct 2018) but in the 27″ space is the forthcoming LM270WQA IPS panel, with a 2560 x 1440 resolution and 165Hz refresh rate. This offers a 1000:1 contrast ratio and 350 cd/m2 brightness. It’s already slipped from Dec 2018 to Q2 2019 when we last updated you, but this has now been moved back to Q3 2019 as the latest expectation. It’s now being listed with a 98% DCI-P3 gamut instead of the earlier sRGB spec, so perhaps that’s part of the further delay. From the Oct 2018 update we saw this module listed with LG.Display’s planned new “1ms G2G” response time spec, so perhaps the push for improved response times has also led to some delay in mass production.
27″ IPS with 1080p and 240Hz update
We know a bit more now about the 27″ IPS panel we talked about back in Oct 2018 with a 1920 x 1080 resolution and 240Hz refresh rate. We know that this will be the LM270WF9 panel now and production has been shifted back from Q3 to Q4 2019 now. The specs now also include a 1000:1 contrast ratio, 400 cd/m2 brightness and sRGB gamut.
Big delays for the 27″ IPS Panel with 4K and 144Hz
We also talked last time about the newly planned 27″ IPS panel with 3840 x 2160 UltraHD resolution and 144Hz. The first IPS alternative to the panel quite widely used from AU Optronics now in models like the Asus ROG Swift PG27UQ and Acer Predator X27. This was due for production in our last update for Q4 2019 but that’s now been pushed back to….”H2 2020″! That’s one hell of a delay. We know the panel part will be the LM270WR8 and it is also listed no with HDR600 support.
A new 16:10 aspect ratio option in 25″ size
This is a rare sighting that might be popular with some users. A new 25″ sized IPS panel is already in production since March 2019 apparently which will have a 16:10 aspect ratio and 1920 x 1200 resolution. It also has a 3 side borderless design, 1000:1 contrast ratio, 300 cd/m2 brightness and sRGB gamut. Expect to see some displays announced soon using this panel.
Possible delays with the new 37.5″ IPS panel with 144Hz?
We’ve already seen the LG 38GL950G announced based on this particular panel, and new information about the spec and features has recently appeared on LG’s website. We’ve not yet heard anything official around release dates, but it feels like it is getting nearer and our guess would be a release around Q3. Last update we had from LG was expected around Sept 2019. There may be nothing to worry about here, but the LM375QW2 panel that will be used has been updated in the latest roadmap we’ve seen to a possible Q1 2020 release (originally expected Q2 2019). It does state that “schedule can be updated” but this may give some cause for concern about possible delays? We’ve reached out to LG for an update on the 38GL950G.
