MSI Optix MAG342CQR is the World’s First 34″ Ultrawide Monitor with 1000R Curvature

MSI have showcased their new Optix MAG342CQR display at CES 2020 this week in Las Vegas. It’s a new 34″ ultrawide screen with a more aggressive 1000R curvature, for increased immersion and viewing comfort. It is designed to more closely match the “curvature of the human eye” apparently. The screen has a 3440 x 1440 resolution with a 21:9 aspect ratio.

MSI are marketing it as the “World’s first” although we’ve already seen recent and earlier announcements from Samsung for their new G9 and G7 screens which feature the same 1000R curvature, although available in screen sizes of 49″, 32″ and 27″ only. So the MAG342CQR is still the first 34″ ultrawide with this curvature.

Research suggests that 1000R is the optimal level of display curvature for productivity and closely matches the peripheral vision of humans at a standard viewing distance. With a 1000R curve, this monitor is designed to be around 1000mm away from the user’s eye position, which is ideal for most setups, especially when considering the ultrawide format of this screen. This radius allows all of the panel to be a similar distance from the user’s eyes, a factor which helps reduce eye strain. 

The screen has a 144Hz refresh rate and is supported via adaptive-sync for variable refresh rates from both AMD and NVIDIA systems. Official ‘-sync Compatible’ certification has not yet been confirmed. It’s based on a Samsung SVA panel and MSI are advertising it at CES with a 1ms response time, which we would definitely take with a pinch of salt. There is a 10-bit colour depth support offered and apparently the screen will use Quantum Dot coating to boost the colour gamut.

No word on pricing yet, but the screen is expected to be released Q2/Q3 . More details when we get them.
